"Nigaki" Material Characteristics
Bitterwood has a red to pale yellow color and a distinct wood grain.
It is a lightweight yet firm wood.

Uses of "Nigaki"
Decoctions are made by this boiling dried wood shavings or dried leaves in hot water.
Because of its light weight and hardness, it is also used as a dye and in woodwork and marquetry.
Of course, it is also made in very small numbers for Go Bowls.

Origin of the name "Nigaki"
The name "Nigaki(the literal translation is "bitter tree")" comes from the strong bitter taste of its branches and leaves.
The dried bark is decocted and used as a bitter-tasting stomachic.
The tree is also called "kuboku," from the crude drug name "kuboku".
