Materials : Mikurajima-hon-tsuge (Mikura Island grown boxwood) / Mikurajima is an island located in the central part of the Izu Islands (an area with many islands of various sizes) in Tokyo, Japan.
The quality of tsuge grown in the unique soil and climate is perfect for making shogi pieces.
Mikurajima Island is the most highly regarded tsuge producing area along with the Satsuma region of Kagoshima Prefecture, that produces Satsuma tsuge.
The hontsuge grown on Mikurajima Island is the best material for shogi pieces in terms of the color, luster, touch, weight, and texture of the wood.

Calligraphy : Ryoko-syo (Ryoko-syo script) 菱湖書 'Ryoko-sho' is a script based on the calligraphy of Maki Ryoko, a calligrapher of the latter Edo Period, and with its clear, slender characters is a highly popular script, regardless of professional or amateur status.

Shogi pieces types : hand-carved (“Tebori-goma”) 手彫り駒 “Tebori-goma” (hand-carved Shogi pieces) are Shogi pieces created by literally carving the characters into the surface of the wood.
The degree and style of carving vary depending on how simplified or detailed the characters are.
A wide range of calligraphy styles is also used for the engraved characters, giving rise to many distinct types of Shogi pieces.
Please refer to the images for details on the Shogi piece production process.

Materials : Satsuma-hon-tsuge
Ranked equally with the finest quality wood grain of 'Mikurajima-hon-tsuge', 'Satsuma-hon-tsuge', with its hard and tenacious wood, is also referred to as 'Practicality is Satsuma-hon-tsuge'.

Wood grain : Masame (straight wood grain) This wood is cut so that the grain runs straight and vertically through each piece.
While it may lack the striking appearance or rarity of patterns such as Torafu (tiger grain) or Nemoku (root grain), it possesses the distinctive elegance and refined beauty unique to Masame (straight grain).
Its hardness and excellent feel during play make it a highly popular choice—many players even prefer Masame over the more decorative Moku woods.
