This is a pair of super extra large Kenponashi Go bowls crafted by Traditional Craftsman Biei, designed for Go stones up to size 42.

These beautiful bowls are created using lathe woodcraft techniques refined through over 50 years of experience.
Kenponashi is a Japanese pear-family hardwood long treasured as a fine wood, admired for its dignified, subdued color and dense, refined surface texture.
Its elegant presence enhances the stately character of a Go board without appearing overly ornate.
Its grain and tone resemble those of the well-known premium Honkuwa (true mulberry) Go bowls, though Kenponashi carries a slightly warmer reddish hue.

The wood is dense with moderate hardness, offering a smooth, moist feel in the hand.
As a turned piece, it finishes beautifully, and the rounded curves of the bowls display a refined natural luster.
With continued use, the color deepens and gradually matures into a calm amber tone.
These bowls allow you to appreciate the natural patterns shaped by nature, offering a quiet and timeless charm.

*It is a beautiful pair of Go bowls with almost no visible flaws.
*Please refer to the photos for details.
*This Go Bowl is for Go stones up to size 42.
*A copy of the Traditional Craftsman certification is included.

Kenponashi is a fine wood name referring to select material from the Japanese pear family (Rosaceae, genus Pyrus), known for its particularly dense structure and beautiful mottled figuring among Japanese pear woods.
It has long been used for turned objects and fine crafts, and has been valued for small decorative items, tea utensils, and ornamental components.

Genponashi size 42
Kenponashi is a diffuse-porous wood, with vessels distributed evenly throughout, resulting in a very smooth surface texture.
Its dense fiber structure produces a fine, refined finish with an elegant natural luster when turned on a lathe.
It offers an excellent balance of hardness and resilience, along with relatively good dimensional stability.
With its understated yet dignified presence, Kenponashi continues to be highly regarded as a premium craft material.
