This is a pair of extra-large Keyaki (Japanese zelkova) Go bowls – Tall shape, crafted by Traditional Craftsman Biei, designed for Go stones up to size 36.

These beautiful bowls are created using lathe woodcraft techniques refined through over 50 years of experience.
Made from the distinguished hardwood Keyaki, renowned for its bold grain and commanding presence, these bowls have a dignified and substantial character.
Keyaki is one of Japan’s most representative hardwoods and has long been used in shrines and temples, high-end furniture, and even taiko drum bodies due to its strength and durability.

The shape of these bowls is not the standard “Yasui-style,” but rather a distinctive Tall shape characterized by its cylindrical form.
This Tall shape is rarely seen on the market, making it a particularly uncommon design.
With its sharp silhouette and wide opening, it offers a different impression from the bamboo-node-inspired “Honinbo-style.”

Combining practicality with decorative appeal, these Keyaki Tall-shape Go bowls are suitable not only for daily play but also as a refined gift.

Keyaki flat style size 36
Keyaki wood is hard and resilient, offering excellent durability and making it well suited for everyday play.
Its greatest appeal lies in its expressive grain patterns.
As a ring-porous wood with clearly defined growth rings, it displays bold and dynamic figuring, and may occasionally show distinctive patterns such as bird’s-eye or wave-like grain, creating a truly one-of-a-kind appearance.
When polished, the wood develops a natural luster that adds elegance within its calm presence, giving it a strong visual impact on the board.
The color ranges from bright yellow-brown to reddish-brown, gradually deepening and gaining richer luster with continued use.
The evolving character brought by aging is one of the unique pleasures of keyaki wood.

Biei
Traditional Craftsman Biei was born in Gunma Prefecture into a family engaged in lathe-turned woodworking and has spent over 50 years studying and refining the techniques of lathe woodcraft.
Working daily with a wide variety of woods, he continues to produce high-quality Go bowls through skilled craftsmanship and careful attention to detail.

In recognition of his expertise in lathe woodcraft, he was certified as a “Traditional Craftsman” in 2000.
