This is a pair of extra-large Tochi (Japanese horse chestnut) Go bowls crafted by Wood craftsman Kai-shi, designed for Go stones up to size 40.

Go bowls made from tochi wood are relatively rare as a bowl material.
As shown in the photos, these bowls have an overall pale yellowish white tone with a beautiful light appearance, highlighted by tochi’s characteristic silky ripple-like sheen (ripple marks) in places.
Because the growth rings are also light and unobtrusive, the brightness and natural luster stand out even more.
They are relatively lightweight for Go bowls, with a soft, fine, and dense wood texture.
Tochi wood is also commonly used for furniture, musical instruments, wooden bowls, and trays.
Go bowls with such a bright and gentle impression are uncommon, making them especially recommended for those seeking light-colored bowls or a rare and distinctive material not often found on the market.

*The base is branded with the “Kai-shi” mark.
*This Go Bowl is for Go stones up to size 40.

栃40号 Tochi (Japanese horse chestnut) is a widely distributed Japanese hardwood known for its beautiful grain and gentle, elegant color.
It features a natural tone that ranges from pale yellowish white to a warm amber color over time, along with a silky-smooth surface texture that gives a refined and warm impression.

Tochi wood

It sometimes shows distinctive figured patterns such as wavy chijimi-moku (curly figure), making it especially valued as a decorative wood.
Relatively lightweight and easy to work, with good dimensional stability, it is used for a wide range of items including crafts, vessels, furniture, small goods, and Go bowls.
It feels pleasant to the touch, and another attraction is how the surface gains richer luster with continued use.
As a natural material, each piece shows unique variations, giving every item its own one-of-a-kind character.
