This is a pair of extra-large Koematsu (resin-rich aged pine) Go bowls crafted by Wood craftsman Kai-shi, designed for Go stones up to size 40.

Koematsu refers to pine wood from trees several hundred years old that contains an especially high amount of natural resin.
Over time, the resin settles and enriches the surface, developing into a glossy, beautiful reddish-brown tone with a bold, weighty grain pattern. It has long been used as a craft material in the Setouchi region of Japan.

肥松40号 Koematsu Go bowls are crafted from the rare material known as koematsu—pine wood that has absorbed a large amount of natural resin over many decades or even centuries, becoming dense, heavy, and richly matured.
Unlike ordinary pine, koematsu offers a solid, weighty feel, distinctive color tones ranging from amber to deep brown, and bold, expressive grain patterns.
Because of its high resin content, the wood shows a beautiful sheen that shifts with the light, and with continued use it develops even deeper luster and character.
Each piece displays unique grain variation, so no two patterns are alike, adding special enjoyment to ownership.
Combining hardness with resilience, the material is highly practical and suitable for everything from everyday play to long-term collection use.
The natural warmth and strong presence of this wood elevate the visual harmony with Go stones and boards.
These bowls are especially recommended for those who appreciate traditional materials and distinctive, individual grain character.
