Tanshin Kiln made "Suisho-bori Hand-painted Seigaiha pattern Five lidded Tea Cups Set"

This is a five lidded tea cups set featuring the Seigaiha (blue ocean wave) pattern, one of Japan's traditional designs.
The pattern, depicted in blue, represents waves that expand infinitely.
The distinctive round, window-like perforations are created using a special technique called "Crystal Carving" (Suisho-bori).
This technique is achieved by firing specially blended clay—crafted with Tanshin Kiln’s secret formula—twice at over 1,300°C.
Each step, from making the holes, filling them with clay, to painting the design, is meticulously done by hand by skilled artisans.
This highly intricate process requires great time and effort, making mass production difficult.
However, the craftsmanship ensures that each piece possesses a unique beauty and warmth within its simplicity.

When tea is poured, the Crystal Carving allows the color of the drink to subtly shine through the perforations, creating an elegant visual effect.
This set is perfect for everyday use and comes in a paper gift box, making it an excellent choice for gifts as well.

This is a five lidded tea cups set featuring the Seigaiha (blue ocean wave) pattern, hand-painted in blue on fine white porcelain.
The set is distinguished by its Crystal Carving (Suisho-bori) technique, with delicately carved round perforations on the sides.
The Seigaiha pattern is also painted on the inner bottom of each tea cup.
The bottom of each tea cup is inscribed with the word "Tanshin", signifying that it was crafted by Tanshin Kiln.

丹心窯工房 丹心窯工房 Founded in 1978, this kiln is located at the foot of the mountains in Otarugo, Hasami Town, Nagasaki Prefecture, a region renowned for its pottery.
It took about 5 years to establish the technique of “crystal carving” (trademark registration).
In 2023, Tadayoshi Nagasaki, the second generation, started to work at the same kiln.

丹心窯水晶彫 In its early days, the kiln produced only cloudy Hotaru-yaki pottery*.
However, through relentless trial and error, it finally succeeded in creating a new type of Hotaru-yaki—one that was colorless, transparent, and radiantly beautiful.
Its crystal-like brilliance led to the name "Suisho-bori" (Crystal Carving).
丹心窯水晶彫 "Suisho-bori" is a unique technique developed by Tanshin Kiln, in which high-quality white porcelain from Amakusa, Kumamoto Prefecture is meticulously perforated.
The holes are then carefully filled with a specially blended clay, a secret formula of Tanshin Kiln, and fired to create a shimmering, crystal-like transparency.
Each hole is hand-carved by artisans, and the clay is manually inserted into each one.
The pieces are then fired twice at 1,300°C, a time-intensive process that ensures their exceptional quality and beauty.
*Hotaru-yaki (literally "firefly ware") is a ceramic technique where translucent holes are carved into the pottery and filled with glaze, allowing light to pass through.

丹心窯青海波 The "Seigaiha (Blue Ocean Wave)" pattern is a traditional auspicious design that symbolizes a wish for eternal peace and prosperity.
Inspired by the beauty of nature, this pattern features flowing, curved lines that evoke images of the sea and water.

It is also believed that the Seigaiha pattern carries a purifying meaning, as it represents the act of washing away misfortune with water, making it a symbol of protection against evil.

Originally, Seigaiha was the name of a traditional Japanese court music (Gagaku) performance.
The wave-like pattern became well-known because it was used on the costumes worn by the performers in this dance, eventually becoming a widely recognized motif representing ocean waves.
