Shogi pieces craftsman "静山 (Sei-zan) " made Mikura Island grown hon-tsuge (boxwood) Ito-masa, Kinki-sho (Kinki script), mori-age (embossed) hand engraved Shogi pieces.

The wood is Mikura Island grown hon-tsuge (boxwood) Ito-masa, which is considered to be the highest quality wood.

Shogi pieces craftsman "静山 (Sei-zan) " was a komashi who never made a single set of carved pieces, and all the pieces he made were Mori-age (embossed) pieces.
More than 30 years after his death, new pieces are very rare, and only one pair of this inventory is available.

Komashi: Seizan, born in Tokyo in 1904, died in 1991. Kanai Seizan Real name: Kanai Akio He was one of the leading Komashi active mainly in Tokyo from the Taisho to Showa periods.
He is said to have been the first to invent the Mori-age (embossed) piece, and began making pieces at the suggestion of "Ryuzan (TOYOSHIMA Ryuzan)," a piece maker active from the Taisho to Showa periods.
In the early years, he produced more than 1,000 pairs of "Seizan Ryuzan" pieces in the "Ryuzan-saku" style.

The key to making "Seizan" pieces is "how to make pieces that are faithful to the calligraphic style. The pieces are characterized by "gentle, elegant, and soft characters, and honest and careful finishing" of the character itself.
"Kinki-sho calligraphy" is very popular with its long history and dynamic writing.
"Kinki" is a very popular calligraphy style engraved on Shogi pieces.
There is a famous saying among Shogi players, "playing Shogi cannot start without Kinki and cannot end up without Kinki".
'Mori-age-koma' is a piece made by filling the engraved characters with lacquer, and after drying and polishing the surface flat, finishing by using a brush to add more lacquer on top of the engraved lacquer parts to give slightly raised characters.
The "Mori-age" is a characteristic of the piece maker's attention to detail.
The "Shogi" piece by Seizan has a relaxed, raised part that is gentle and soft, and shows the skill of a master craftsman.
*The "Mori-age" piece is a piece manufacturing method that is classified as one of the finest among all pieces.
wood grain:Mikurajima is an island located in the central part of the Izu Islands (an area with many islands of various sizes) in Tokyo, Japan.
The quality of tsuge grown in the unique soil and climate is perfect for making shogi pieces.
Mikurajima Island is the most highly regarded tsuge producing area along with the Satsuma region of Kagoshima Prefecture, that produces Satsuma tsuge.
The hontsuge grown on Mikurajima Island is the best material for shogi pieces in terms of the color, luster, touch, weight, and texture of the wood.
Ito-masa:" Ito-sasa" is a type of wood grain with very fine, parallel, thread-like grains, and is characterized by its beautiful grain.
The annual rings are only 1 to 2 mm wide, and the grain is very narrowly spaced.
Therefore, it is a precious fabric that can only be obtained from superior trees with a very large diameter.
