These Go stones are "Legendary Hyuga Special Clamshell Go Stones", Flower grade, Size33" ,made of Hyuga clamshells.

 Hyuga clamshell Go stones are famous for its unique and delicate stripes and luster.

Go stones made from Swabute clamshells collected at Oguragahama Beach in Hyuga City, Miyazaki Prefecture, may have color stains on the shells due to the natural nature of the material.
Those with this color stain remaining in the finished Go stones are classified as Hyuga specialty "Hana-jirushi (Flower Grade)".

 Size 33 clamshell Go stone should assure the thickness of 9.2mm, so its material clamshells must be thicker than 10.5mm. It is hard to collect big and thick Hyuga clamshells because they grow very slow in natural environment. Such thick clamshells are truly rare.
We highly recommend this product to those who are looking for rare Go stones.

Now unfortunately, clam shells, the raw material for Go stones, are not available at all at Okuragahama beach in Hyuga City, which used to be the production center of Hyuga-produced clamshell Go stones.
Because of the slow growth of the Hyuga clam shells, large clam shells are not often harvested, and in most cases, only one clam shell is harvested from each clam shell.

The thickness of Go stones are size 33 (about 9.2mm), so the raw material clam shells must be at least 10.5mm thick.
  • It is practically impossible to make new products with Hyuga clams because they are almost depleted these days.
  • The shell is more dense and smooth, and harder than Mexican ones.
  • Only one piece of Go stone can be cut out from one clamshell.
  • All 182 Go stones need to assure the same thickness and quality.
