These Go stones are "Legendary Hyuga Special Clamshell Go Stones", Snow grade, Size33" ,made of Hyuga clamshell. *Repaired product

Hyuga clamshell Go stones are famous for its unique and delicate stripes and luster.
The pure white color is a must-have gem for Go lovers.

"Whiteness" is the criteria for sorting Snow grade Hyuga clamshell Go stones. Small colorations sometimes remain on the surface as it is made from natural clam. All the clamshell stones are carefully sorted and only 5-10% of the products are classified as snow grade.
*Among Snow grade stones, some products are slightly colored.

Size 33 clamshell Go stones should assure the thickness of 9.2mm, so its material clamshells must be thicker than 10.5mm.
It is hard to collect big and thick Hyuga clamshells because they grow very slow in natural environment. Such thick clamshells are truly rare.
We would like to recommend this masterpiece for those want to purchase the best of the best.

These Go stones are "Repaired" product, polished by our Go stone craftsmen.
It is not new, but a very rare Legendary Hyuga clamshell Go stones.

Now unfortunately, clam shells, the raw material for Go stones, are not available at all at Okuragahama beach in Hyuga City, which used to be the production center of Hyuga-produced clamshell Go stones.
Because of the slow growth of the Hyuga clam shells, large clam shells are not often harvested, and in most cases, only one clam shell is harvested from each clam shell.

The thickness of Go stones are size 33 (about 9.2mm), so the raw material clam shells must be at least 10.5mm thick.
In addition, to produce one set of Go stones with whiteness and stripes that can be classified as "Yuki-jirushi (Snow grade)", tens of thousands of such rare shells are needed, so it is hopeless to produce new Go stones in the future.

  • It is practically impossible to make new products with Hyuga clamshell because they are almost depleted these days.
  • The shell is more dense and smooth, and harder than Mexican ones.
  • Hyuga clamshells boasts dense and beautiful strips, that shows growth line of the shell.
  • Only one piece of Go stone can be cut out from one clamshell.
  • Only 5-10% of the Go stones are classified as Snow grade because they are sorted according to the beauty of stripes and color, and the presence of scratch.
  • All 182 Go stones need to assure the same thickness and quality.
    *In odder to make one set of Go stones (182 stones for Snow grade, Size 33), we need to use at least tens of thousands naturally-grown Hyuga Clamshells.
