Calligrapher Mr. Iwao said about the creation of this work, "This artwork was created during my stay in France while exhibiting at the 2019 JAPAN EXPO PARIS.
I was inspired by the joyful faces of the local people as they experienced Japanese culture—through anime, games, calligraphy, paintings, and cosplay. I wanted to capture those expressions in the form of a character.
In line with the principle of Shoga Dogen (Calligraphy and Painting Share the Same Origin), the character『喜』(Yorokobi, meaning 'joy') is expressed in a way that resembles a smiling face, like a painting brought to life."
