These Go bowls are "Yakusugi Go Bowls – Premium Burl Grain", created by wood craftsman Mr. Yukinori Kawashita.
They are designed to hold Go stones up to size 42.

These Go bowls are made from Yakusugi burl (abura-kobu)—a rare part of Yakusugi (Yakushima cedar) estimated to be approximately 3,000 years old.
A burl (kobu) is a naturally formed swelling on a tree, developed when the tree undergoes stress, injury, or unusual growth, causing resin to accumulate. The term abura-kobu refers to burls rich in resin and oils.
Among Yakusugi materials, burl wood is especially prized for its striking appearance and is often used in high-end woodworking.

This particular burl also features "moku" (figuring)—a shimmering grain pattern that appears to shift and glisten depending on the viewing angle.
The combination of shimmering stripes and intricate grain makes this a truly exceptional and rare Go bowl set.

The shape of each bowl is a natural design, crafted to preserve the original form and texture of the material.
What would normally be considered imperfections—such as indentations, hollows, holes, or dark coloration—become striking aesthetic elements that highlight the raw and powerful beauty of the wood.
The result is a one-of-a-kind work of art—solemn, awe-inspiring, and almost otherworldly—worthy of being called a “masterpiece of beauty.”

Since Yakusugi trees are now protected as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage, logging has been prohibited, and acquiring new Yakusugi timber is extremely difficult.
As a result, Yakusugi is considered one of the most valuable and rare woods in Japan. Its rich, complex grain and dignified appearance have captivated collectors around the world.
While Yakusugi is widely used for fine furniture and décor, its unique beauty and rarity also make it highly sought-after for Go bowls.

This is a one-of-a-kind item.

These Go bowls are crafted from the oil burl of Yakusugi (Yakushima cedar), a richly resinous and exceptionally rare wood sourced from trees estimated to be around 3,000 years old.
What might normally be considered flaws—such as gouges, dents, holes, and dark coloration—have instead become elements of overwhelming natural beauty, giving rise to the truly one-of-a-kind Go Bowls.
The bowls are exceptionally heavy, weighing approximately 1.4 kg and 1.3 kg, which is about 1.0 kg heavier than typical Yakusugi Go bowls, adding to their remarkable presence and gravitas.
Both the lids and bowls have been crafted with slightly thicker walls to emphasize and preserve the natural qualities of the Yakusugi wood.
*The bottom of each bowl is branded with the mark of the craftsman: “川下幸徳 (Yukinori Kawashita).” Please refer to the photos for more details.
*These bowls can accommodate Go stones up to size 42.
As Yakusugi contains a high amount of natural oil and resin, please avoid storing Go stones inside the bowls for extended periods, as the resin may seep out over time.
