This is "Hyakunin Isshu Katsuragawa 百人一首 桂川" produced by "Oishi Tengu-Do," a long-established karuta company founded in 1800.

This is a reprint of the Hyakunin Isshu, an anthology of 100 poems in the style of ink painting, painted by "Tamechika Reizei 冷泉 為恭", a Yamato-e artist active in the late Edo period, using fine brush strokes with an awareness of the dignified Heian aristocrats.
It is a beautiful gem, backed with dark blue Echizen Washi paper sprinkled with gold and silver.
It is packaged in a sturdy paper box.
The set consists of 100 "read cards" and 100 "take cards".

It is recommended as a gift for those who are interested in Japanese culture and the unique Japanese karuta called Hyakunin Isshu (100 poems).

This is a "Hyakunin Isshu" for art, collection, or gift rather than for games.
Both the design and the backing are more luxurious than those for competitions.
The set consists of 100 "read cards" and 100 "take cards".
The size is one size larger than the ordinary Hyakunin Isshu, and cursive script is used for easy reading.

The "Hyakunin Isshu (百人一首)" is a collection of waka poems by 100 poets, one per poet, arranged in chronological order.
In the early Kamakura period (1185-1333), "Ogura Sanso Shikishi Waka" written by "Fujiwara no Teika" at his villa on Mt. Ogura in Kyoto was widely used as "Utagaruta," and later the common name "Ogura Hyakunin Isshu" was established from the origin that Teika compiled it at Mt.
In the Edo period (1603-1867), as woodblock printing techniques became popular, the form of utagaruta with pictures spread widely to the general public, and it also became a popular game for people to enjoy.

The 100 poets selected for the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu are 79 men and 21 women, with 6 poems in spring, 4 in summer, 16 in fall, 6 in winter, 1 in separation, 4 in independence, 43 in love, 19 in miscellaneous and 1 in miscellaneous autumn.
All 100 poems were selected from tanka poems included in imperial waka anthologies such as "Kokin Waka Shu" and "Shinkokin Waka Shu".

The "Hyakunin Isshu" is now better known as a karuta than as a collection of poems, and is a culture that is especially familiar to people as a New Year's tradition.

Recently, the popularity of the sport has increased and the number of competitors has grown, as it has been featured as a subject in movies, dramas, manga, and anime.
It is a very elegant culture to compete with each other while reading out waka poems composed by poets in the distant past, and I would like to preserve it for future generations.

"Oishi-Tengu-Do 大石天狗堂" was founded in 1800 by "Kuranosuke Oishi 大石内蔵助" in Kyoto, and has been a long-established karuta (Japanese style playing cards) shop in Kyoto for over 200 years.
Through "karuta," as represented by the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, as well as Go and Shogi, "Oishi-Tengu-Do 大石天狗堂" is conveying the traditional beauty of Japan, the Japanese spirit, and the elegance and fun of Kyoto to the modern age.
Oishi Tengu-do's representative products include Iroha Karuta, Inubou Karuta, Kyo Iroha Karuta, Genji Karuta, Genji Kaiawase, Hana Karuta, Hanafuda, Unsun Karuta, as well as Hyakunin Isshu.
In particular, Oishi Tengu-do produces karuta approved by the All Japan Karuta Association for the Hyakunin Isshu, and the Genji Karuta, a karuta based on Japan's world-famous Tale of Genji, is another popular product of Oishi Tengu-do.
