This beautiful set of shogi pieces is made from premium Mikurajima-grown hon-katsura (true boxwood)—considered one of the finest materials for shogi piece bases.
The ryoko-syo is gracefully raised across the surface, with each character carefully crafted to fill the piece to its edges.
On the board, the striking presence of the raised lettering enhances its visual appeal even further.

Kogetsu was a Japanese shogi piece craftsman active during the Showa period, based in Yamagata Prefecture.
His real name was Mr. Shigeo Kunii, and he worked under several professional names (or mei), including “Kogetsu”, “Koma-shi Kogetsu”, and “Meisho Kogetsu” (“Master Artisan Kogetsu”).
The title “Meisho Kogetsu” was reportedly granted to him by Yasuharu Oyama, the 15th Lifetime Meijin and then-president of the Japan Shogi Association, in recognition of his outstanding craftsmanship.

Kogetsu’s works are renowned for their elegant brushwork and meticulous finishing, particularly in carved and raised pieces written in cursive (sōsho) script.
Even today, his pieces are highly valued by shogi enthusiasts and collectors alike. His refined skill and artistic vision have played a significant role in the history of Japanese shogi piece craftsmanship.
