Go bowls:Wood craftsman Mr. Kawashita made Yakusugi Octagonal Square Go Bowls with Oil Burl Tiger Stripe Grain for ~Size 34 Go Stones
These Go bowls are crafted from "Abura-kobu / Oil Burl" Yakusugi (Yakushima cedar) wood, estimated to be approximately 2,000 years old.
"Kobu / Burl" forms when a tree sustains damage or undergoes abnormal growth, causing resin to accumulate and create a raised, knot-like structure.
Among these, "Abura-kobu / Oil Burl" refers to sections that contain particularly high amounts of resin and natural oils.
Yakusugi Oil Burl is highly prized for its exceptional beauty and is often used in the finest woodworking pieces.
Additionally, these Go bowls features a rare and exquisite grain pattern known as "Tora-moku / Tiger Stripe Grain", characterized by shimmering, striped patterns that change in appearance depending on the viewing angle.
The "Octagonal Square" shape has relatively sharp edges between the surfaces of the lid and the bowl.
In particular, the lid is not rounded but finished with a more angular, faceted design.
The intricate and complex "Abura-kobu / Oil Burl", the shimmering Tiger Stripe Grain, the distinct reddish-brown hue unique to Yakusugi, and the rare octagonal shape all come together in harmony, making this a truly stunning Go bowl.
Go board:Japan grown Hon Kaya made Ten-masa Go board with legs (6.2-Sun/189 mm thick)
The lines of a board are marked using Tachi-mori, the skill of drawing lines using a Japanese sword.
At the present, 6.2-Sun (approx. 189 mm) thick ten-masa board made from Japanese-grown kaya, a material that has become increasingly difficult to obtain, is exceptionally rare.
This floor-standing Go board offers outstanding weight, presence, and a truly luxurious feel.
This floor-standing Go board offers exceptional solidity and a truly luxurious presence.
There are remnants of intergrown knots on the bottom, and a dented mark from impact along the edge between one end grain and the side.
