This is a Shimadzu Satsuma Kiriko Cut Crystal Glass "Two-Tone Pendant “Hikari-e” (S) / Ruri–Green".

A pendant crafted from square crystal glass approximately 9 mm thick, featuring a large cross and the traditional Asanoha (hemp leaf) motif, both expressed through intricate three-dimensional engraving.
The gradation of Ruri blue and green, combined with subtle shifts in light, creates delicate variations in color that add an elegant accent.
Light reflecting through the cut-glass patterns sparkles in radiant bursts, giving the piece an exceptionally brilliant and refined presence.

This “Two-Tone Pendant – Hikari-e (S) / Ruri–Green” is crafted from layered crystal glass composed of Ruri blue (a deep bluish-purple), green, and clear glass from the outside inward.

The chain is made of Silver 925, and the fittings connecting the chain to the pendant are crafted from 14k white gold.

What is “Ruri-iro”?
A deep blue with a slight purple undertone, evoking calmness and mystery.
The color originates from the gemstone Ruri (lapis lazuli), one of the seven treasures in Buddhism, long treasured since ancient times for its mystical beauty.

Satsuma Kiriko Cut Crystal Glass was born in the Satsuma region during the Edo period.
It was started by Narioki Shimazu, the 27th head of the Shimazu family, and greatly developed by Nariakira Shimazu, the 28th head of the Shimazu family.
Research on colored glass was conducted, and crimson, indigo, purple, green, and other colors were successfully produced.
Among them, the crimson color, which was successfully produced for the first time in Japan, was praised throughout the country as “Satsuma's crimson glass” at that time.

In 1858, just seven years after assuming the position of feudal lord, Nariakira suddenly passed away.
After that, the business was downsized, and the factory was destroyed by fire during the Anglo-Satsuma War in 1863, and the production of Satsuma Kiriko Cut Crystal Glass was discontinued around the time of the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877.

In 1982, an exhibition held at a department store in Kagoshima triggered the momentum for the restoration of Satsuma Kiriko Cut Crystal Glass.
In April 1985, Satsuma Glass Crafts Corporation (now integrated into Shimadzu Kogyo Corporation) was established and the project to restore Satsuma Kiriko Cut Crystal Glass began.
Some works were measured and they could see the actual works, but most of them had to be restored based on the limited number of photographs.
They referred to various research records to infer their characteristics and the shape of the tools used and repeated trial production.

As the restoration project progressed, so did the production of newly planned Satsuma Kiriko Cut Crystal Glass.
While following the beauty of Satsuma Kiriko Cut Crystal Glass of the past, the company began to produce designs for modern lifestyles and large works that were not possible in the days when slow cooling technology was low.
In 2001, they released “Nishiki-e,” a complex gradation of two colors.
In 2015, they presented “思無邪 Shimuja,” a new innovation in Shimadzu Satsuma Kiriko Cut Crystal Glass with a monotone world view.

[Shimadzu Satsuma Kiriko] is crystal glass.
Crystal glass is a high-quality, colorless glass with high transparency and light refractive index.
It gets its name from the fact that its brilliance is like that of a crystal.
When exposed to light, it shines with beautiful iridescence and sparkles.
Satsuma Kiriko from the 1800s was crystal glass containing 45% lead oxide, but they have improved it to less than 25% and within the elution amount specified by the Food Sanitation Law.

Satsuma Kiriko Cut Crystal Glass is a traditional craft designated by Kagoshima Prefecture.

Since the pendant is made of crystal glass, it may chip or break if dropped or subjected to strong impact.
Please handle it with care when wearing or storing it.
