Shitan (Rosewood) is a broadleaf tree of the legume family, primarily found in Southeast Asia, and has long been treasured as one of the representative “Karaki” hardwoods.
It is renowned as a fine timber for its distinctive deep reddish-purple to dark brown coloration and elegant grain patterns, which gain even greater depth and dignity as the wood ages.

With its hard and dense texture, Shitan is exceptionally heavy, durable, and highly resistant to wear.
For centuries, it has been used in luxury woodcrafts such as fine furniture, Buddhist altars, musical instruments, and decorative furnishings.
The finished surface possesses a natural luster, and when carefully polished, it develops a refined, elegant sheen—earning it the reputation as the “King of Fine Woods.”

In the world of Go and Shogi, Shitan is commonly used for Go bowls and Shogi piece boxes, adding a profound sense of weight and presence that enhances the beauty of the stones and pieces.
Its strength ensures long-lasting use, making it a popular choice for gifts and commemorative items.

As a rare and valuable material, no two pieces of Shitan are alike; each displays unique grain patterns and color tones. This individuality gives Shitan its greatest charm, offering a one-of-a-kind character that holds special value for its owner.
