Black Claro Walnut is a rare North American walnut known for producing especially striking figured grain.
Its intricate stripes and flowing, undulating patterns vary from piece to piece—truly a work of art shaped by nature.
Compared to standard walnut, it displays stronger color contrast, ranging from deep chocolate brown to purplish dark brown tones.
The three-dimensional figuring that emerges depending on the light adds a refined visual accent to the quiet tension of the Go board.
With balanced hardness and stability, these bowls are fully practical for everyday play while also possessing a strong presence as display pieces.
With continued use, the surface gains greater luster and the tones deepen into a richer, more subdued character.
No two grain patterns are ever the same—each piece is truly one of a kind.

Black Claro Walnut is a rare North American hardwood highly valued in premium fields such as luxury automobile interiors, single-slab furniture, fine crafts made from select timber, and fountain pens. It is beloved by artisans around the world for its beauty and character.
Although it is a walnut tree that produces edible nuts, like common walnut, Black Claro Walnut differs in that it is created through intentional grafting rather than occurring purely in nature.
It is obtained from the grafted or hybridized junction between Claro walnut and English walnut trees.
Wood taken especially from the root area and around the graft union often develops extremely complex and decorative figuring due to internal stresses and growth conditions.
Originally cultivated to produce nutrient-rich walnuts, the wood itself gained high value because of its exceptional beauty.
Since grafted trees have a relatively low survival rate and are difficult to grow into large mature trees, thick and long pieces of Claro walnut lumber are particularly rare.

A defining feature of its figured grain is the intricate, interwoven patterns and shimmering highlights that give the material a striking beauty and strength distinct from other woods.
Unlike standard walnut, which typically shows consistent brown tones, Claro walnut displays flowing variations of brown, black, and creamy whitish hues, creating dramatic contrast and depth.

“Kobu-moku” (burl figure) refers to highly decorative grain that appears in the burl formations of a tree.
In these knot-like growths found on the trunk or near the roots, the wood fibers grow in complex, interwoven, and irregular directions.
As a result, unlike straight grain, the surface reveals distinctive swirling or bead-like patterns that are entirely unique.

A defining characteristic of burl figure is its three-dimensional luster and sense of depth created by the irregular fiber structure.
Depending on the angle of light and viewing perspective, the surface expression changes, sometimes resembling ripples on water or a sea of clouds, creating a dreamlike visual effect.
No two patterns are ever the same, and each piece possesses a truly one-of-a-kind character.
Because the fibers are intertwined, burl wood is more difficult to work than straight-grained material, but the finished result offers exceptional presence and beauty.
It is highly valued as a decorative wood and is used in fine crafts, turned woodwork, luxury furniture, and musical instruments.

A natural form shaped over long years by the tree itself—
Burl figure can be described as a unique work of art carved by nature.
