This is a pair of extra large Raiden Go bowls crafted by Traditional Craftsman Biei, designed for Go stones up to size 36.

These beautiful bowls are created using lathe woodcraft techniques refined through over 50 years of experience.
The material, Raiden, is another name for Chanchin (Toona), and is also known as “Tohenboku” or “Raijinboku.”
Raiden has long been used for high-quality furniture and fine crafts as a premium wood.
In Japan, it is still relatively uncommon, and is rarely seen as a material for Go bowls.
It features a gentle reddish-brown tone, ranging from pale red-brown to warm brown, gradually maturing into a calm amber color over time. With continued use, its depth and luster further increase.
The smooth surface beautifully complements the rounded curves of the bowls.
Its slightly moist, smooth feel in the hand and gentle weight provide comfort even during long games.

As with all natural materials, variations in grain and color are part of its unique charm.
These bowls offer a quiet elegance and warmth, rich in character and refinement.

Raiden size 36
It is a deciduous hardwood belonging to the mahogany family (Meliaceae, genus Toona). The wood is valued for its durability and resistance to decay, particularly its strength against moisture.
Its color ranges from pale reddish-brown to a gentle warm brown tone. Over time, it matures into a calm amber shade, gaining depth and luster with continued use.
One of its greatest attractions is how the wood develops richer character as it ages.
It is used for architectural materials, furniture, musical instruments, buckets, and civil engineering applications, and is also valued in parquet-style woodcraft for its beautiful color.
The grain is generally straight and even, sometimes showing soft striping or gentle figuring, giving it an elegant and warm impression.
Lightweight yet moderately hard, it is well suited to lathe turning and fine woodworking.
