This is a pair of extra large Shioji Go bowls crafted by Traditional Craftsman Biei, designed for Go stones up to size 36.

These beautiful bowls are created using lathe woodcraft techniques refined through over 50 years of experience.
The clear, bright wood surface and the quietly flowing, well-ordered grain are the defining charms of Shioji Go bowls.
With its straightforward and clean appearance, Shioji has long been valued as a material for turned objects and fine crafts.
The smooth surface complements the rounded curves of the bowls, while the slightly moist feel and moderate weight in the hand provide a pleasant tactile experience.
With continued use, the color deepens subtly, and the natural luster and character further develop.

Shioji size 36
Shioji wood offers moderate hardness and strength, providing a stable material well suited for lathe turning.
Its color ranges from pale yellowish-brown to a slightly lighter brown tone, developing a gentle natural sheen when exposed to light.
The growth rings are relatively distinct yet not overly bold, giving the wood an elegant and calm appearance.

Biei
Traditional Craftsman Biei was born in Gunma Prefecture into a family engaged in lathe-turned woodworking and has spent over 50 years studying and refining the techniques of lathe woodcraft.
Working daily with a wide variety of woods, he continues to produce high-quality Go bowls through skilled craftsmanship and careful attention to detail.

In recognition of his expertise in lathe woodcraft, he was certified as a “Traditional Craftsman” in 2000.
