Crafted from Yakusugi cedar estimated to be over 3,000 years old, this is an exceptionally beautiful board.

The fine and intricate wood patterns unique to Yakusugi create a distinctive expression unlike that of ordinary Go boards.
The underside bears the calligraphy inscription and seal reading “Yakusugi – Made by Contemporary Master Go Board Craftsman Mr. Kumasu.”
The grid lines are finished in raised tachimori style using high-quality domestic natural urushi lacquer, resulting in a superb finish.

This is a rare Yakusugi board specially crafted by Contemporary Master Go Board Craftsman Mr. Kumasu.
While straight grain (masame) is generally preferred for Go boards, Yakusugi rarely yields true straight-grain material. In order to showcase its richly varied and beautiful grain patterns and colors, it is sometimes intentionally crafted in itame (flat-sawn) style, utilizing both heartwood and sapwood surfaces.

Yakusugi from Yakushima has been protected from logging since the island was registered as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, making newly sourced material extremely difficult to obtain. It is an exceptionally rare and highly prized wood.
Its complex and delicate grain offers a beauty and elegance that never grows tiresome, and there are devoted Yakusugi collectors around the world.
Although widely known as a premium material for tables and fine furnishings, its beauty and rarity also make it highly valued as a material for Go boards.

屋久杉杢 This Go board is crafted from Yakusugi cedar estimated to be over 3,000 years old.

There are noticeable natural black stains, resin pockets, dents, filled areas on the underside; natural dents and resin marks on the top surface; dents running from one end grain to the underside; corner dents; and multiple cracks on the end grain and sides.

Yakusugi contains a high amount of natural oils and resin, which may surface over time. If oil appears on the surface, gently wipe it off with a dry cloth.

現代の名工 熊須健一 Mr. Kenichi Kumasu, a Go board craftsman based in Aya Town, Miyazaki Prefecture, was recognized as a "Contemporary Master Craftsman" by the Japanese government on November 8, 2019.
This prestigious title is awarded to individuals with outstanding skills and achievements in various fields, including traditional crafts and performing arts.


Go board made of Yakusugi (cedar) (over 1,500-year-old cedar trees grown on Yakushima Island, Japan), are so beautiful and graceful with their intricate and elaborate grain patterns that there are serious "Yakusugi collectors" all over the world.
Since Yakushima Island has been registered as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, logging has been prohibited and the quantity of Yakusugi trees on the market is quite limited, making them extremely difficult to obtain.
屋久杉 The color of Yakusugi (cedar) wood is reddish-brown.
It is a very beautiful wood with its unique aroma and intricate grain patterns including moku (figure) and kobu (burl).
