This is a beautifully crafted Corner-rounded shogi piece box made from exceptionally rare Kurogaki (Japanese Persimmon), prized for its striking contrast of black and white grain patterns.

Kurogaki wood requires many years of natural drying before it can be used as a woodworking material.
Because the white and black portions of the wood shrink at different rates, it is highly prone to cracking during the drying process, making it an extremely difficult material to work with.
To create a piece box from such challenging wood, craftsmen carefully shave the material little by little and allow it to dry repeatedly, often repeating this process four to five times before the wood is finally ready for production.
The greatest appeal of Kurogaki lies in its dramatic contrast between black and white.
The elegant black patterns flowing across the entire box, as if painted with a brush, create a truly remarkable and beautiful work of craftsmanship.

This is a corner-rounded Shogi pieces Box.
It is signed "Takahashi Kougei," a woodworking craftsman.
