A Yakusugi table Go board (11×11), Moku, crafted by Contemporary Master Craftsman Kenichi Kumasu.
Thickness 1.8-Sun (approx. 57 mm) one-piece board.
*This is an 11×11 Go board, approximately 200 mm smaller in both length and width than a standard 19×19 board.

This board is made from Yakusugi with beautiful figured grain, finished as an 11×11 Go board.
The distinctive figured grain unique to Yakusugi gives this board a striking beauty.
The underside bears the calligraphy and seal certifying the work of Modern Master Craftsman Kenichi Kumasu: “Yakusugi – Made by Contemporary Master Craftsman Kumasu.”
The grid lines are finished using the traditional Tachimori technique with high-quality domestic natural urushi lacquer, resulting in a superb finish.

This Go board is made from Yakusugi cedar, a very rare material for Go boards, and was crafted by Contemporary Master Craftsman Kenichi Kumasu.
Normally, straight grain (masame) is considered ideal for Go boards.
However, Yakusugi rarely produces straight-grain lumber, and to highlight its richly varied and beautiful grain patterns and colors, boards are sometimes intentionally crafted using itame (either heart side or bark side).

Yakusugi cedar from Yakushima Island is an extremely rare and highly prized wood.
Since Yakushima was registered as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, the logging of Yakusugi has been prohibited, making it extremely difficult to obtain new material.
Its intricate and delicate grain patterns possess a timeless beauty and elegance that never grows tiresome to admire.
In fact, Yakusugi is so admired that there are dedicated collectors around the world.
Yakusugi is widely known as a premium material for tables and fine furnishings, and due to its beauty and rarity, it is also highly valued as a material for Go boards.

現代の名工 熊須健一 Mr. Kenichi Kumasu, a Go board craftsman based in Aya Town, Miyazaki Prefecture, was recognized as a "Contemporary Master Craftsman" by the Japanese government on November 8, 2019.
This prestigious title is awarded to individuals with outstanding skills and achievements in various fields, including traditional crafts and performing arts.


Go board made of Yakusugi (cedar) (over 1,500-year-old cedar trees grown on Yakushima Island, Japan), are so beautiful and graceful with their intricate and elaborate grain patterns that there are serious "Yakusugi collectors" all over the world.
