A burl is a swelling that forms on a tree when it is injured or grows abnormally, as resin accumulates and pushes outward.
Among these, aburakobu refers specifically to burls rich in natural resin and oils, making them especially prized for their luster and depth.
In particular, Yakusugi oily burl is highly valued for its exceptional beauty and is often used in high-end woodworking.
This burl wood also features a rare and striking grain known as “toramoku” (tiger stripe figure)—a shimmering, striped pattern that changes appearance depending on the viewing angle.
The intricate shimmer of the tiger grain along the sides is especially stunning.
Truly, this decorative vase is worthy of being called a masterpiece of beauty.
