Honkuwa [Mountain mulberry] is very popular and the highest quality material to make bowls.

Mulberry wood has a beautiful yellowish wood color, and when polished, it appears golden with a unique texture.
The wood is tough and is even used to make walking sticks, which require great strength.

Today's round-shaped Go bowl is called 'Yasui type'.
But until Yasui type emerged, this "Hon-in-bo" shape was more popular and mainstream for a long time of Japanese history.
