Japanese White Oak has a pale grayish-brown color with growth rings that are generally subtle and not strongly defined.
Its large medullary rays, characteristic of oak species, create distinctive sesame-like grain patterns known as kashi-me.
The wood is exceptionally dense and hard, making it one of the hardest and heaviest native Japanese woods.
As a result, it is challenging to machine and is also considered one of the more difficult woods to dry properly.

Botan Moku (Peony Figure) is an exceptionally rare wood grain pattern characterized by irregular dark streaks that spread like the petals of a peony flower.
Its distinctive and dramatic appearance makes it highly prized as a rare and valuable figured wood.
It is primarily used as a decorative veneer for traditional Japanese furniture, such as dressing tables, as well as for premium wooden accessories including tie clips, hair barrettes, and fountain pen barrels.

There is a tar spot-like feature within the peony figure (Botan Moku). We consider this to be a natural characteristic of the wood.
