This is a set of Shogi pieces craftsman "Fukuryu 伏龍" made Shogi pieces, made from Mikura Island genuine boxwood *Off-spec.

These are "Hori-ume" (Engraved and Filled-in) shogi pieces made from Mikurajima-hon-tsuge (Mikura Island grown boxwood).
The characters are carefully carved in the Ryoko calligraphy style and filled with sabi-urushi (a mixture of lacquer and polishing powder).
"Fukuryu" is not the name of a single shogi piece craftsman, but rather a brand (signature) under which multiple craftsmen produce shogi pieces, supervised by specialty shogi piece shops in the Kansai region and renowned shogi piece craftsmen.
Unfortunately, these shogi pieces are offered at a special discounted price as imperfect items due to defects in the filled areas of several pieces.
The most noticeable filling defects can be seen in the images. However, please note that there are several other defects in addition to those shown.
*Please be sure to carefully check the images before purchasing.

Calligraphy : Ryoko-syo (Ryoko-syo script)
'Ryoko-sho' is a script based on the calligraphy of Maki Ryoko, a calligrapher of the latter Edo Period, and with its clear, slender characters is a highly popular script, regardless of professional or amateur status.

Shogi pieces types : Engraved and Filled-in Shogi pieces
After the artisan carefully engraves each character by hand, the engraved part is filled in with lusted Japanese lacquer.
After drying, the surface of the pieces are polished and finished.
The surface of the Shogi pieces are smooth touch to ensure flatness.
At first glance, the piece's character looks like just writing, but each character is actually engraved and then filled with lusted Japanese lacquer.
As the engraved shapes appear on the surface as they are, this technique requires a high level of engraving skill.
Although it is not as expensive as moriage (Embossed) Shogi pieces, this is also highly valued and priced relatively higher.

Materials : Mikurajima-hon-tsuge (Mikura Island grown boxwood)
Mikurajima is an island located in the central part of the Izu Islands (an area with many islands of various sizes) in Tokyo, Japan.
The quality of tsuge grown in the unique soil and climate is perfect for making shogi pieces.
Mikurajima Island is the most highly regarded tsuge producing area along with the Satsuma region of Kagoshima Prefecture, that produces Satsuma tsuge.
The hontsuge grown on Mikurajima Island is the best material for shogi pieces in terms of the color, luster, touch, weight, and texture of the wood.

All Go stones, Go boards, Shogi pieces, Shogi boards, Go bowls, etc. are made using natural materials.
