Shogi pieces craftsman "勝月 Sho-getsu" made Mikurajima-hon-tsuge (Mikura Island grown boxwood), Masame Moku, Gyoryu-ichiji (Gyoryu-ichiji script) Engraved and Filled-in Shogi pieces.

"勝月 Sho-getsu" is a Shogi pieces craftsman who learned Shogi pieces making under "Fugetsu", a Shogi pieces craftsman master who is regarded as one of the top five masters of the modern age.
"勝月 Sho-getsu" is especially good at "deep engraving".
And "勝月 Sho-getsu" is making mainly engraved, engraved and filled-in Shogi pieces.

  • Materials : Mikurajima-hon-tsuge (Mikura Island grown boxwood) / Mikurajima is an island located in the central part of the Izu Islands (an area with many islands of various sizes) in Tokyo, Japan.

  • Wood grain : Moku / "Moku" refers to the complex grain patterns and figures that rarely appear on the area of branching or close to the tree root in the forms of localized twists and curvatures, which are caused by the specific conditions and unique environment of where the tree grows.
    "Moku" is a highly valued material because of its rarity, aesthetic value, and excellent decorative qualities.

    These are single-character carved pieces where the usual two-character inscriptions for pieces like King (王将), Rook (飛車), Gold General (金将), and Pawn (歩兵) are replaced with simplified single-character engravings such as 王, 飛, 金, and 歩.
    The characters are carved in a relatively bold style, deeply engraved and larger in size, making the pieces easy to see and highly legible.

  • Engraved and Filled-in Shogi pieces : After the artisan carefully engraves each character by hand, the engraved part is filled in with lusted Japanese lacquer.
    After drying, the surface of the pieces are polished and finished.
    The surface of the Shogi pieces are smooth touch to ensure flatness.
    At first glance, the piece's character looks like just writing, but each character is actually engraved and then filled with lusted Japanese lacquer.
    As the engraved shapes appear on the surface as they are, this technique requires a high level of engraving skill.
    Although it is not as expensive as moriage (Embossed) Shogi pieces, this is also highly valued and priced relatively higher.
