Black Claro Walnut is a rare North American wood highly prized by craftsmen around the world. It is used for high-value applications such as luxury car interiors, large solid-wood slabs, fine woodcrafts, and fountain pens.
Native to North America, it is a walnut-producing tree like other walnut species.
However, unlike ordinary walnut, Black Claro Walnut is not simply naturally occurring—it is produced through human grafting.
This prized wood is obtained from the grafted and hybridized area where Claro Walnut and English Walnut meet.
The original purpose of this grafting is said to have been to produce highly nutritious walnuts. However, because the resulting wood proved exceptionally beautiful, it eventually became highly valued as a premium material in its own right.
Grafted trees have a relatively low success rate, and growing them into large, mature trees is extremely difficult. As a result, substantial pieces of Black Claro Walnut with ample width and length are exceptionally rare.

biei Traditional Craftsman Biei was born in Gunma Prefecture into a family engaged in lathe-turned woodworking and has spent over 50 years studying and refining the techniques of lathe woodcraft.
Working daily with a wide variety of woods, he continues to produce high-quality Go bowls through skilled craftsmanship and careful attention to detail.

In recognition of his expertise in lathe woodcraft, he was certified as a “Traditional Craftsman” in 2000.
